David Beckham and Kaka could be in India for Premier Futsal

It’s about our vision which they are interested in. Both Beckham and Kaka,” Managing Director and co-founder of Premier Futsal, Dinesh Raj said.A host of international stars such as Ronaldinho, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Michel Salgado, Falcao and Hernan Crespo lighted up the tournament this year attracting fans by their presence. Before Futsal, the Indian Super League (ISL), now 2 years old took the lead in bringing top draw stars to play in India. ISL has got some of the topmost stars from Alessandro Del Piero, Robert Pires, Roberto Carlos, Nicolas Anelka, Joan Capdevila to compete in India representing different franchisees. But unlike ISL where some of the marquee players, looked like a pale shadow of their former selves were found wanting, Futsal presents them with a perfect fit to regale fans with their ball trickery.last_img read more

Wrist injury forces Scotland batsman Matt Machan to retire at age 26

first_imgScotland and Sussex batsman Matt Machan has been forced to call curtains on his career at the age of just 26 because of a wrist injury. The left-hander had earlier ruled out of the second half of the 2016 English domestic season in order to undergo surgery on what his Sussex coach Mark Davis described a ‘repetitive’ wrist injury. However, Machan, who was a part of the Scotland squad in 2015 World Cup as well as in the 2016 World T20, failed to alleviate the problem fully by going under the knife and, now, he has decided to retire from the game.Deeply saddened to announce the news, Machan insisted that he had taken the decision following a medical advice and keeping in mind his long-term health.”It is with great sadness and an extremely heavy heart that I have to announce my retirement from the professional game due to a wrist injury. Following medical advice, my long-term health is most important to me and I have to take that into account,” cricket.com.au quoted Machan as saying. The 26-year-old, who made his international debut in 2013, also said that he feels extremely sad to see his career cut short at a time when he just started performing at his menacing best.”I believe as a batsman I was only just starting to come into my own and it is a real shame that this has been cut short so early as I believe I had so much still to offer Sussex over the next few years,” he added.advertisementWith the development, Machan became the latest cricketer in his mid-20s to announce shocking retirement this year. In April, Surrey and England all-rounder Zafar Ansari called curtains on his cricketing career at the age of 25 while NSW batsman Ryan Carters bid adieu to the game in May at the age of just 26.Machan, who appeared in 36 matches across ODIs and T20Is and scored 1,141 runs with six fifties and one century, will be best remembered for his match-winning performance during Scotland’s breakthrough victory against Hong Kong at the World T20 last year. He smashed 15 runs from just four balls, including a six, to finish the match and hand Scotland their first major victory at a world event after 17 years.last_img read more

Watch: Lionel Messi bamboozles his pet dog during holidays

first_imgWhile everyone is holidaying and enjoying the beaches of America, Argentina and Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi was seen doing things differently during his holiday post the World Cup.Messi, who is yet to join his Barcelona teammates for the new season after the World Cup, was seen enjoying his time with a dog in a garden under the sun.Messi, 31, was seen playing around with his Dogue de Bordeaux — a large French Mastiff. Messi was juggling the ball around while the dog tried to catch it and despite numerous attempts, much like defenders, it failed to get the ball off his feet. The video of him doing the ‘Keep-ups’ dribbling drill with his dog was posted by his wife Antonella Roccuzzo on Instagram. As Messi continued to bamboozle the ‘big dog’, his children were heard laughing at the poor’s dog’s expense, which ran out of breath after chasing shadows from one side to another. However, Messi’s time playing in the lawns will soon be over as he is all set to join his teammates to prepare for the new season after a disappointing World Cup with Argentina, where they were knocked out in the round-of-16 by eventual champions France.Messi along with Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique will return to Barcelona training on Tuesday at Sant Joan Despi while their teammates continue on their tour of the United States.Barcelona’s next assignment will be the Supercopa de Espana against Sevilla on August 13 and that will be followed by the Joan Gamper Trophy final against Boca Juniors on August 14. Their La Liga campaign will be underway against Alaves from August 19.advertisementMessi will again be the main man for Barcelona as they look to win back-to-back La Ligas and go further in the Champions League.last_img read more

Public-Private Partnerships Heightening Country’s Global Profile

De C.V. (GAP), “people who are airport specialists.”Mr Holness emphasised that while the State is retaining ownership of the facility under the 25-year concession agreement, “we have to face the fact that the Government of Jamaica was never and probably will never be specialists in the management of airports.”In this regard, he said it is imperative that the Government continuously engages the public to debunk misconceptions that relinquishing direct hands-on management and operation of State assets limit their value. The Prime Minister argued that allowing persons and entities with the competent skills, as is the case with GAP, to assume direct responsibility for managing the NMIA will serve to “unlock a new world of opportunity for our airport.”Mr. Holness said the Government’s PPP agenda reflects a far more “enlightened approach” in acknowledging that there is a new pathway for achieving higher levels of economic growth for Jamaica, “if we are willing to unlock and unleash the assets and have them paired with the right competencies.”Under the NMIA concession agreement, GAP will be responsible for improving the airport’s land and air operational efficiency, and financing and completing a modernisation programme, at an estimated cost of over U$110 million.Additionally, the Government will receive a guaranteed percentage of the airport’s gross revenues. The entity has the option to extend the contract by another five years. The GAP has concession management agreements, some totalling 50 years, for 13 airports in Mexico. The entity has been managing operations at the Sangster International Airport   (SIA) in Montego Bay since 2003. UN Condemns Latest Attack Near UN School Annie Lennox Blogs About Violence

first_imgAmidst an ‘appalling’ escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip since the collapse of a brief 1 August ceasefire, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the killing today of at least 10 Palestinian civilians in shelling outside of a United Nations school in Rafah which had been sheltering thousands of civilians.“The attack is yet another gross violation of international humanitarian law, which clearly requires protection by both parties of Palestinian civilians, UN staff and UN premises, among other civilian facilities,” declared Mr. Ban in a statement issued by his spokesperson in New York.“United Nations shelters must be safe zones not combat zones,” the Secretary-General’s statement continued, adding that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have been repeatedly informed of the location of these sites. “This attack, along with other breaches of international law, must be swiftly investigated and those responsible held accountable. It is a moral outrage and a criminal act.”The UN chief’s strongly worded statement comes after the collapse two days ago of a humanitarian ceasefire brokered by the United Nations and the Unites States, and in the wake of two earlier reported attacks near schools managed by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).As the brief pause faltered and attacks in Gaza escalated, UN humanitarian officials yesterday said that weeks of intense fighting has left medical services and facilities in the enclave “on the verge of collapse,” warning that a health disaster of widespread proportions is rapidly unfolding.Mr. Ban’s statement today expressed “profound dismay” over the appalling escalation of violence and loss of hundreds of Palestinian civilian lives since the breach of the ceasefire. The resurgence in fighting has only exacerbated the man-made humanitarian and health crisis wreaking havoc in Gaza.“Restoring calm can be achieved through resumption of the ceasefire and negotiations by the parties in Cairo to address the underlying issues,” said the statement, adding: “The Secretary-General repeats his demand to the parties to immediately end the fighting and return to the path of peace. This madness must stop.”Activist Annie Lennox has also continued her blogs about the unfolding events in Gaza, condemning the violence that has affected so many.“Over the last week, the gamut of divisive opinions on the situation in Gaza has been represented and expressed freely on this blog,” she wrote on Facebook. “What tends to happen is that people tend to take “sides.” As simplistic as it might seem, my perspective lies on the side of “sustainable peace.”“This should absolutely be the main imperative for all political leaders and representatives in the region. But as this onslaught continues, the more obscure the possibility of peace seems to become. I have personally observed the situation over the last two decades and have never before felt such an overwhelming sense of hopelessness.“Where on earth does the peaceful solution lie? Half the population of Gaza are teenagers and children… They are trapped. There is nowhere for them to safely avoid the bombardment. As time passes, the numbers of the dead and wounded will continue to rise exponentially while the hospital facilities and basic services will cease to function. What kind of future can both sides hope to have after this kind of armageddon?“A prospective ceasefire in Gaza fell apart Friday morning when two Israeli soldiers were killed in fighting inside Gaza and a third was suspected captured.“Subsequent Israeli strikes killed at least 62 Palestinians in east Rafah, where the capture was reported, and 19 in south Rafah later in the day, according to the Gaza health ministry.“’I think it’s going to be very hard to put a ceasefire back together again,’ US president Barack Obama said. He condemned Hamas.“Obama said that ‘innocent civilians in Gaza caught in the crossfire have to weigh on our conscience and we have to do more to protect them.’“1,600 Palestinians have been killed and an estimated 8,750 wounded in the conflict so far, the ministry said.“Israel continued striking Gaza Friday night. Rockets continued to fly into Israel, the army said, and air raid sirens were reported in Ashkelon and elsewhere.“The Israeli army named the missing soldier as Second Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, 23. Sixty-three soldiers have been killed in the conflict.“Hamas political officials denied knowledge of a captured soldier. One said, “Even if it was true, the military leadership are the only ones authorized to report such an event.”“Israeli forces killed two Palestinians in clashes in the West Bank on Friday, Palestinian medical officials said.“An estimated 250,000 Gazans have sought refuge in UN shelters, UNRWA said, warning of an imminent collapse of its support network.”last_img read more

Dominion Diamond investors approve US12billion sale to Washington Cos

CALGARY — The Canadian head office of Dominion Diamond (TSX:DDC) is to remain in Calgary after its shareholders voted on Tuesday to approve its US$1.2-billion sale to Washington Companies.Larry Simkins, president of the Montana-based acquirer, attended Dominion’s special meeting. He said afterwards it wouldn’t make sense to relocate the 100 employees of Dominion in Calgary after the head office was moved from Yellowknife earlier this year.“It just moved here and the last thing we would do is uproot families and move them back to Yellowknife or some other place,” he said.Investors in the Northwest Territories diamond producer voted more than 99 per cent in favour of the deal announced in July. Dominion had launched a strategic alternatives search after it rejected an initial Washington Companies offer in February.Shareholders are to receive US$14.25 per share in cash when the acquisition closes, expected before the end of the year if Canadian regulatory approvals are received. The sale gives Washington Companies a 100 per cent interest in the Ekati diamond mine and a 40 per cent stake in the Diavik diamond mine operated by Rio Tinto, both in the Northwest Territories.“We’re going to execute on the plan that management already presented,” said Simkins, adding that his privately-owned company will follow Dominion’s plans to extend the life of the Ekati diamond mine and invest in exploration.Dominion chairman Jim Gowans said the purchase of his company illustrates the high value the rest of the world sees in the diamond mining industry in Canada.“The diamond industry over the past couple of years has gone through a flat cycle but it’s looking up now,’ he said.“Most of the growth is actually here in Canada for the world diamond supply so I’m very optimistic.”Simkins said Washington Companies is not currently interested in bidding for any other Canadian mine assets.Canada has opened six diamond mines in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Quebec but two have have since closed.Follow @HealingSlowly on Twitter. read more

1900acre fire spreads across Northwest Alaska

first_imgA wildfire is burning in a remote area of northwest Alaska. The Alaska Fire Service reports that the Zane Hills Fire was discovered this week, and mapped at 1,900 acres. AFS spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said the fire, burning in a snow free area of tundra in the Selawik National Wildlife Refuge, was spotted by AFS staff flying to the village of Norvik for training.Listen now“They saw smoke, flew over it, kinda sized it up a little bit, which was creeping,” Ipsen said. “It wasn’t doing too much. And they made note that it was an area that was surrounded by snow.”Ipsen said the fire is suspected to be human caused, as snow machine tracks were spotted in the surrounding area. Although the fire is not threatening anything, and expected to burn itself out, Ipsen said it provides warning that fire season is beginning. She said that’s true even around Fairbanks, where despite above normal snow, spring is revealing fire prone vegetation.”Almost like it freeze-dried in some places, so that’s exposed right now is really dry,” Ipsen said.Ipsen said spring is a challenging time for wildfire mangers are they are still bringing together resources. Anchorage Assembly to appoint interim member

first_imgThe Anchorage Assembly is losing two of its members, though for different reasons. While it’s unusual for Assembly members to depart before the end of their terms, it’s not unprecedented.Two-term Assembly member Amy Demboski of Eagle River-Chugiak’s District 2 resigned from her seat Monday to serve as a deputy chief of staff in the Dunleavy administration.Tuesday night’s Assembly meeting was the first without Demboski, who’s been one of the body’s staunchest conservatives for much of her tenure. She built a reputation as a diligent member who sat on a number of committees and easily won re-election by her constituents in 2016. In her 2015 bid for Anchorage mayor, Demboski emerged from a crowded field of candidates in a run-off against Ethan Berkowitz, which she ultimately lost. Her seat will be filled with an interim appointment made by sitting Assembly members, then go up for a regular vote in April’s municipal elections.West Anchorage Assembly member Eric Croft announced he won’t be running for re-election in April. Croft, a former state legislator, is nearing the end of his first term. He says with their kids now off to college, he and his wife are downsizing and moving to a new home outside of his current district. He will serve until the end of his current term.Five of the Assembly’s 11 seats are up for election in April.last_img read more

GTA hack reveals Google Glass true gaming potential

first_imgIf you could take the HUD from your favorite game and move it to just inside your peripheral vision on Google Glass, would you do it?Google has been spending a lot of time recently working on explaining how Glass could be useful to the average user. Sure, you can check your email and social networks, and you’ve got an OK camera at eye level that could be capable of taking a photo faster than you could pull your phone out of your pocket, but for many that’s not enough. We know that native Glassware apps are on the way, which will help a great deal with these explanations of value. It seems likely that the biggest untapped market for Glass is to behave as a second screen for the things going on when watching TV or playing games. One Glass developer took matters into his own hands — he fired up a copy of Grand Theft Auto 3, and decided to try something new with his wearable tech.Mike DiGiovanni is no stranger to writing native apps for Glass. Mike is the developer who first figured out how to let Glass users take a photo with a blink, and has been working hard on other apps ever since. This latest concept pulls the map from GTA 3 and places it on Glass as a head-up display. It’s not ready for GTA V just yet, but the concept is incredibly cool.Right now the app keeps the display on the whole time you play, so Glass’ battery life becomes a concern. DiGiovanni explained that if the app were to behave more like the current GPS system, where it wakes the display when something important happens, battery life would be significantly longer. So, how about it? Would you slide Glass on when sitting down to a gaming session? If you could use Glass as the motion tracker in Halo, or even as just the ammo counter in your FPS of choice, it’d be a whole new level of interaction for most users.last_img read more
