JNU sedition case: Court says role of Delhi Police on sanction matter complete

first_imgNew Delhi: A city court hearing the 2016 JNU sedition case Saturday observed that the city police’s role regarding sanction was complete and it will now ask the Delhi government about the same. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sherawat made the observation after being told by police that sanction was an administrative action and the charge sheet can be filed without that. DCP of Special Cell of Delhi Police, Pramod Kushwaha, told the court that the agency has already sent a request to the Delhi government seeking sanction. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murder The court Friday pulled up the Delhi Police over non-appearance of the DCP, who was asked to file report in the case. The Delhi Police had earlier told the court that authorities were yet to give requisite sanctions to prosecute former JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar and others in the case, and it would take two to three months to procure sanctions. On January 14, police had filed a charge sheet in the court against Kumar and others, saying he was leading a procession and supported seditious slogans raised in the JNU campus during an event on February 9, 2016. The court had also sought a report from the deputy commissioner of police assigned to the case.last_img read more

ISIL unlawful sharia courts meting out monstrous punishments UN warns

Those who are punished are accused of ‘violating the group’s extremist interpretations of Islamic shari’a law or for suspected disloyalty,’ said Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), at a Geneva briefing this afternoon. “The ruthless murder of two men, who were thrown off the top of a building after having been accused of homosexual acts by a so-called court in Mosul, is another terrible example of the kind of monstrous disregard for human life that characterised ISIL’s reign of terror over areas of Iraq that were under the group’s control,” she added. Last week, ISIL also posted photos on the web of two men being ‘crucified’ after they were accused of banditry. The men were hung up by their arms and then shot dead. Photos were also posted of a woman being stoned to death, allegedly for adultery. OHCHR has received numerous other reports of women who had been executed by ISIL in Mosul and other areas under the group’s control, often immediately following sentences passed by its ‘shari’a courts.’“Educated, professional women, particularly women who had run as candidates in elections for public office seem to be particularly at risk. In just the first two weeks of the year, reports indicated that three female lawyers were executed,” said Ms. Shamdasani. Other civilians who are suspected of violating ISIL’s rules, or who are suspected of supporting the Government of Iraq, have also been victims. Four doctors were recently killed in central Mosul, allegedly after refusing to treat ISIL fighters. On 1 January, ISIL reportedly executed 15 civilians from the Jumaili Sunni Arab tribe in al-Shihabi area, Garma district, Fallujah. “They were apparently shot dead in front of a large crowd for their suspected cooperation with Iraqi Security Forces. In another incident, on 9 January, ISIL executed at least 14 men in a public square in Dour, north of Tikrit, for refusing to pledge allegiance to it,” Ms. Shamdasani confirmed.OHCHR has also been following reports of the release of a group of sick and elderly Yazidis, which included accounts that a ransom was paid. There are also reports that a ransom has been demanded made for Japanese hostages. The Japanese Government is in the process of verifying whether the video of the hostages is authentic, she said in response to questions. Finally, she said OHCHR will continue to document human rights abuses and violations taking place in Iraq and is expected to present a report to the Human Rights Council in March. read more

Credit: Wyatt Crosher | Assistant Sports EditorFresh off an NCAA tournament run that took Ohio State to the Frozen Four, members of the men’s hockey team were invited to attend NHL development camps over the offseason.Eight players received invites to these camps, including senior forward Mason Jobst, junior defenseman Tanner Laczynski, redshirt junior defenseman Wyatt Ege and redshirt senior goaltender Sean Romeo. These camps allow players to gain experience skating with professional players and working with NHL coaches. Mason JobstThis is the third time Jobst, the NCAA’s active leading scorer, has participated in an NHL development camp. Last offseason, he attended camps as a free agent invitee with the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins. This year, he joined the Minnesota Wild.“It was very cool,” Jobst said. “We’d go on the ice and we’d do either a skills session with one of their skills coaches or a skating lesson with the skating guy. So, it was pretty cool. The NHL coaches would come out and talk to us a little bit. It was a lot of fun.”Tanner LaczynskiLaczynski, who notched a career-high 47 points and earned First Team All Big-Ten honors last season, was taken with pick No. 169 by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round of the 2016 NHL Draft and has attended their camp the past two offseasons.“It’s definitely something special and definitely something I look forward to every summer, especially just to learn from those coaches and scouts and just to hear what they have to say about each individual’s game and how you can improve your game,” Laczynski said. Wyatt EgeEge has attended camp with the Las Vegas Golden Knights the past two years. This past season, the redshirt junior was fourth on the team in assists, while tying for the lead among defensemen on Ohio State with 18 points.“It was nice to see the guys, just because it was my second time back there. It was nice to see some familiar faces,” Ege said. “At [my] first development camp I was kind of a little nervous, seeing all these guys, you know, all these draft picks and now, going back for a second year, I already knew them.”Sean RomeoComing off a season during which he ranked No. 2 in the Big Ten in both goals against average and win percentage, Romeo was invited to his first development camp with the Columbus Blue Jackets.“It was cool to kind of be around some of the top players in the country, a lot of players we play against in college, and kind of learn from them and got great coaching for a week. [I] learned a lot and I’m excited to implement that stuff this year,” Romeo said.In addition, freshman forward Quinn Preston attended camp with the Winnipeg Jets, and freshman forward Gustaf Westlund joined the Florida Panthers. Freshman defenseman Ryan O’Connell, drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2017 NHL Draft, attended their camp. Senior defenseman Sasha Larocque also worked with the Anaheim Ducks at their camp over the summer. The Buckeyes will look to take the lessons from these camps into their season-opening series against Arizona State on Oct. 12 and 13. read more

Tourism hit hard by negative images abroad

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Greece’s negative image abroad as a holiday destination has had an impact on most sectors of the tourism economy, with representatives saying that compared to last year, yacht rentals are down by 35 percent, conferences and corporate events have declined by 50 per cent and car hires are 15 per cent down this season compared to last.Cruise reservations are also expected to take a hit, according to Andreas Stylianopoulos, a board member of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) and vice president of the Passenger Shipping Association (SEEN). Stylianopoulos attended the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention that took place in Miami, Florida, earlier this month, from which, he told Kathimerini, it was clear that Greece can expect a small decline in the number of cruise arrivals this year. He added that tourists’ interest continues to be centred on Athens although there is a significant amount of concern regarding the Greek capital’s negative reputation. Crewless yacht rentals have seen a decline of 35 percent so far this year, according to the head of the Hellenic Professional Yacht Owners Association (EPEST), Antonis Stelliatos. “One of Greece’s biggest yachting companies attended this year’s travel and tourism trade show in Dusseldorf. While in previous years the company would make from 80 to 100 rental deals at the show, this year it made only seven,” Stelliatos said indicatively. As far as the category of motor yachts with a crew of 12 is concerned, Stelliatos says that the big question is how many of these will be laid up this year, adding that of the 800 vessels for hire on the market, less than 50 have so far made deals, and these for very few days. According to Stelliatos, the reason for the low interest is Greece’s negative image abroad. Source: Kathimerinilast_img read more

Hellenic Republic sold business as usual

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram UPDATEGeorge Calombaris says it’s “business as usual” as the building housing his Hellenic Republic restaurant in Brunswick has been sold for $2.375 million. The chef told Neos Kosmos that the restaurant won’t be affected, as he has secured an ongoing ten-year lease before the building was sold. The sale went 15 per cent above the reserve, after five interested parties pushed up the price. It means the new tenants will be netting a return of $120,000 per annum plus outgoings and GST, and includes a tenant bank guarantee of six months rental.Real Estate agency Fitzroys said the property generated a significant level of interest from local and interstate investors not only due to the high profile nature of the tenant but also its generous site proportions and rapidly evolving inner north location.“The demographics of Brunswick East have undergone a transformation in recent years, with the gentrification of the area resulting in a wave of affluent home owners settling in the area, improving the economic viability of the Lygon Street retail precinct,” Fitzroys Director Chris Kombi said.“Accordingly, we have witnessed a significant amount of development within the immediate and broader vicinity of the subject property. This strong demand for inner city living has resulted in an escalation of residential values in the area.”The sale comes after Calombaris’ restaurant group, Made Establishment has been rethinking its business model. It has closed a number of under-performing restaurants, including the recent Manu Feidel collaboration Le Grand Cirque, and will be looking to buy smaller buildings with lower rent and spend less on refurbishing the spaces. last_img read more

ABVP leaders install Savarkars statues in DUs campus

first_imgNew Delhi : Ahead of the Delhi University students’ union polls, the RSS-affiliated ABVP on Tuesday installed statues of Veer Savarkar, Subhash Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh ‘without due permission’ outside the gate of the varsity’s Arts Faculty in north campus. The move has been criticised by the Congress-affiliated NSUI and Left-backed AISA which said Savarkar cannot be kept on the same pedestal as Bose and Singh. ABVP-led Delhi University Students’ Union president Shakti Singh said they had approached the varsity administration repeatedly for permission to install the statues but there was no response from it. National Students’ Union of India’s Delhi unit president Akshay Lakra criticised the ABVP move, saying, “You cannot put Savarkar on the same pedestal as Bhagat Singh and Subhash Chandra Bose.” Also Read – BJP launches anti-AAP campaign to save Delhi Advertise With Us “If the statues are not removed within 24 hours, we will launch a strong protest,” he added. This is not acceptable. The place they have put up the statue is not a private property but a public land,” she said. The land falls under the jurisdiction of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). No immediate reaction was available from the varsity. The DU students’ union polls will be held next month though the dates for the same have not yet been announced.last_img read more

TVs Next Commercial Break Might Be the Pause in Your Binge EXCLUSIVE

first_imgSome outlets are willing to bet they will. “As binge-viewing happens more and more, it’s natural they are going to want to pause,” says Jeremy Helfand, vice president and head of advertising platforms for Hulu, speaking of modern-day couch potatoes. Hulu intends to unveil what it calls “pause ads” in 2019. When a user chooses to stretch, or get a snack, he says, “it’s a natural break in the storytelling experience.”AT&T also has hopes to use the pause to lend new momentum to TV advertising. The company, which owns DirecTV and U-verse, expects to launch technology next year that puts a full-motion video on a screen when a user decides to take a respite. “We know you’re going to capture 100% viewability when they pause and unpause,” says Matt Van Houten, vice president of product at Xandr Media, AT&T’s advertising division. “There’s a lot of value in that experience.”Many consumers think they can escape the usual barrage of TV pitches with new streaming-video services that run only a few ads, and sometimes even none. That notion has been bolstered in recent months by efforts from companies like NBCUniversal, which has experimented with running fewer ads in primetime. But TV  watchers may have to recalibrate their view. Media companies don’t want to lose the billions of dollars advertisers pay them each year. And consumers would have to submit to much higher prices for access to their favorite shows if commercials didn’t play some part in the overall experience. Indeed, Hulu offers its service at a higher price if customers want to avoid commercials completely. At a September conference held for advertisers, AT&T executives made the case that even new forms of video entertainment – including streaming – require ad support. “If we are to continue this pace of developing content of this quality in these volumes, then we need advertising to pay for some of the content,”said Brian Lesser, chief executive of the company’s Xandr unit, while speaking to reporters at the event. “I don’t believe – nor does anybody on the team believe – that subscription video on demand services could possibly pay for all the content being developed” without relying on money from advertising. The plans for pauses suggest new power in the media industry could go to those outlets that can establish a more direct tie to viewers. A linear TV network, after all, can’t necessarily make a regular event out of someone choosing to run to the kitchen for a bowl of pretzels.Even some of those more traditional media bastions are experimenting with new TV technology as well. CBS has tested technology that lets advertisers add tailored messages to national commercials seen by viewers using certain connected TVs. A retailer with a sale at an outlet 30 miles away could add a note to someone who lives close by, and a restaurant might tout its delivery service in a particular city or town. The network also is testing a system that lets it “split” ad slots  — sending an ad for a lower-priced car to a household owned by a young couple, or an ad for high-end technology to a TV watched by high-income consumers. The media companies will have to do more than gamble on consumers’ receptivity to the concept of seeing an ad at stops of their own choosing. “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should,” cautions Tim Hanlon, CEO of Vertere Group, a media and advertising consultancy.  He sees a lot of sense in “pause ads” that play off the moment when they are watched or are tailored to particular consumer occasions, but “if it’s simply inserting, let’s say a reverse-mortgage ad with a direct-response phone number? I don’t know if that aids the consumer experience.”Indeed, streaming fans have already balked at seeing promos turn up between videos. Some Netflix aficionados earlier this year protested a test in which the streaming giant flashed promos for its various programs in the seconds between the end of one selection and the start of another. Could real pitches from outside advertisers be next? Netflix has never run traditional commercials on its services and its executives have said they do not want to start doing so.Media executives say they will step carefully. “You do not want to deliver a longform advertisement in this situation,” says Hulu’s Helfand. “I think you have seconds to deliver your message effectively.”  He says the company expects to have “more than half of advertising revenue come from non-disruptive experiences” over the next three years. TV viewers may dislike commercial breaks, but Madison Avenue soon hopes to get them to watch ads during a very different kind of interruption.Coca-Cola struck advertising gold in 1929 by introducing the slogan, “The Pause That Refreshes.” In 2019, there is new hope in a similar concept: a refreshing pause that carries a word from a sponsor. Consumers have more power these days to avoid ads that get in the way of the viewing of their favorite shows, but maybe  —  just maybe — they will show interest in commercials that come on screen during interludes of their own choosing from long streaming sessions or on-demand playback.Imagine an ad for soda or beer that comes on the screen just as you decide to stop the action during a run of an episode of “Black-ish”  on Hulu to go to the kitchen for a snack, or a pitch for toilet paper that begins to move in the moments before you choose to halt the video stream for a bathroom break. And yet, there’s no guarantee viewers will welcome “pause-vertising” any more than they do the current crop of 30-second pitches. Ever since the DVR made its way into living rooms last decade, Madison Avenue has worked furiously to find new ways to keep commercials from being skipped or ignored. As more TV viewers indulged in fast-forwarding past ad breaks, marketers tried to get them to slow down by tucking secret codes and special scenes into their spots. Now they must identify even more aggressive methods of getting audiences to pay attention to their pitches.“Pause ads” have surfaced in the past. When companies like TiVo and ReplayTV were introducing early versions of the DVR to the marketplace, Coca-Cola and Universal Pictures signed up to place banner on ads on ReplayTV screens whenever customers opted to pause the show they had recorded. Today’s technology lets marketers add more sound and motion the proceedings. AT&T’s Van Houten suggests viewers might even seen interactive pause ads that allow them to “telescope” to more information from the advertiser with the click of a remote.Viewers could balk at having ads thrust at them in this new milieu, but the AT&T executive suggests that next year’s “pause ads” could simply be the next iteration of the “flying toaster,” those low-res screen savers that popped up whenever a user of the Apple Macintosh let the machine sit too long. In time, he suggests, consumers might prefer the pause pitches to other forms of TV commercials.Making the connection clear for consumers that the ads help subsidize their viewing will be important says Hanlon, so many of the new commercials might have to make clear they help to bring programming to the screen. Are viewers ready for a pause in viewing that becomes a moment of selling? “In the end, consumers will vote with their feet,” says Brian Sheehan, a professor of advertising at Syracuse University’s SI Newhouse School of Public Communications. Or perhaps their remotes. And definitely their wallets.center_img Popular on Variety ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Forcing a metal to be a superconductor via rapid chilling

first_imgScheme for thermodynamic and kinetic approaches to realizing superconductivity in certain strongly correlated electron systems. The conceptual electronic phase diagram considered in this study is displayed with pressure/carrier doping as a control parameter. The double well and ball represent temperature-dependent schematic free-energy landscapes and realized electronic states in each cooling process, respectively. The thermodynamic approach, which can be advanced by increasing pressure or carrier doping, results in a change in the lowest free-energy state, from a certain competing order to a superconducting (SC) state. By contrast, the kinetic approach, which can be advanced by rapid cooling, allows the system to kinetically avoid the first-order phase transition to the competing order and thus to remain in a metastable supercooled state, which is expected to eventually turn into superconducting at low temperatures. Credit: Science Advances (2018). DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.aau3489 Discovery of bismuth superconductivity at extremely low temperature jeopardizes theory A team of researchers with the RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science and The University of Tokyo, both in Japan, has found a way to force a metal to be a superconductor by cooling it very quickly. In their paper published on the open access site, Science Advances, the group describes their process and how well it worked. Scientists around the world continue to seek a material that behaves as a superconductor at room temperature—such a material would be extremely valuable because it would have zero electrical resistance. Because of that, it would not increase in heat as electricity passed through it, nor lose energy. Scientists have known that cooling some materials to very cold temperatures causes them to be superconductive. They have also known that some metals fail to do so because they enter a “competing state.” In this new effort, the researchers in Japan have found a way to get one such non-cooperative metal to enter a superconductive state anyway—and to stay that way for over a week. Noting that there is a very small delay between the moment when a metal reaches a temperature cold enough to enter a superconductive state and the onset of the competing state, the researchers came up with an idea—if the metal was cooled rapidly, it might not have a chance to enter a competing state. They liken the idea to metal forgers plunging their work into cold water after fashioning to prevent it from weakening. To find out if their idea worked, they made a metal sample out of iridium and tellurium. They connected electrodes and gave it a jolt of electricity. The jolt initially caused the metal to heat to over 27°C, but then it cooled very rapidly to -269°C, in under ten microseconds. The researchers found that via quick-freeze technique, the metal changed into a superconducting state for over a week. Journal information: Science Advances More information: Hiroshi Oike et al.
