Jharkhand: Six of family found dead, suicide notes recovered

first_imgSix members of a family were found dead in the Bodom Bazar area of Jharkhand’s Hazaribag district on Sunday, a senior police officer said. The incident comes weeks after the case of mass suicide in north Delhi’s Burari grabbed the nation’s attention. Briefing media persons, North Chhotanagpur Range DIG Pankaj Kamboj said three people were found hanging in two adjacent flats, while two children – a girl and a boy – were seen lying in a pool of blood on the floor of one of the flats. One jumped to death A sixth person, who is suspected to have jumped from the four-storey apartment, was found dead near the main entrance of the complex, he said. Six suicide notes were also recovered, the DIG said, adding that they were written by one person, but undersigned by each of them. The notes cited “financial crisis” as the reason behind their deaths, Mr. Kamboj said. “It appears the adult members of the family committed suicide one after another. However, the children, it seems, were made unconscious before their throats were slit,” he added. Asked if there were injury marks on the bodies, Superintendent of Police Mayur Patel Kanhaiya Lall, who was also present at the press meet, said details of the exact cause of death could be ascertained only after a post-mortem. When pointed out that the neighbours in the residential complex did not hear any screams or cries, the SP said, “We are investigating all aspects in this regard.” The six members were identified as Mahavir Prasad Maheshwari (70), his wife Kiran Maheshwari (65), their son Naresh Prasad Maheshswari (40), daughter-in-law Priti Maheshswari (38) and two grandchildren, Aman (10) and Anath (8).₹50-lakh debt DIG Kamboj said initial investigations suggest that Naresh Prasad Maheshswari, a grocery shop owner, was reeling under a ₹50-lakh debt. “We have recovered two signed cheques, an ether bottle, cotton and blades from the site of the incident,” he said.last_img read more

Liam Plunkett wants to emulate Cristinao Ronaldo and LeBron James

first_imgEngland fast bowler Liam Plunkett is looking up to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and LeBron James for inspiration as he targets to play in the 2019 ICC World Cup.The 33-year-old is working on regaining his speed and variations while staying fit.”Reading articles about the best sportsmen, (such as) Ronaldo and LeBron James, they get lighter and they get more powerful. That’s something I’m working on because I still want to run up and bowl 90mph,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Plunkett as saying.”I’m pretty much teetotal for the summer, because this is probably my last chance to play in the World Cup, and I’m looking at my rest and recovery, because sometimes you over-train and when it comes to the game, you don’t always bowl as quick as you want, because you’ve burnt yourself out a little bit,” he said.Plunkett, who is struggling to maintain his pace, is giving his best to get a chance to be in the England squad for the World Cup, beginning May 30.The fast bowler has 116 wickets from 78 ODIs under his belt so far. He was the standout player for England in 2017.”I feel like I should be in that 15. I feel like I’ve played well and been one of England’s best seamers in the last two or three years, Plunkett said.”I’m hoping they (selectors) will back me because I feel like I’ve done a good job. I feel as fit as I’ve ever been, and I feel like my pace was coming back towards the end of that (West Indies) trip,” he said.advertisementPlunkett missed part of England’s tour of Sri Lanka in 2018 due to clash with his wedding. Dabo Swinney Wants Clemson To Play Georgia Every Season

first_imgDabo Swinney reacting during a football game.ARLINGTON, TEXAS – DECEMBER 29: Head coach Dabo Swinney of the Clemson Tigers reacts after a play in the second half against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish during the College Football Playoff Semifinal Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic at AT&T Stadium on December 29, 2018 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Ron Jenkins/Getty Images)Clemson and Georgia are pretty frequent non-conference rivals. The two sides have faced off 64 times dating back to the 1890s.The last game in the series came in 2014, a 45-21 Georgia win. That was the second in a two game series, with the Tigers taking the 2013 edition.Last week, Clemson and Georgia announced two more future games, to be played in 2032 in Athens, and 2033 in Clemson. That adds on to a previously-scheduled 2029 and 2030 home-and-home.The two teams will also face off in the 2024 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta. If Dabo Swinney had his way, Clemson and Georgia would play every single year. The rivalry used to be an annual game. Swinney would welcome to Dawgs joining South Carolina as SEC programs on Clemson’s annual slate. From DawgNation:“We should play Georgia every year if it was up to me,” Swinney said. “We’re 80 miles, and they need a game, we need a game. We had to travel to Texas A&M last year, when we could have gone 80 miles.”[…]“For years and years and years, Clemson and Georgia played every year, and somewhere along the line that went away,” Swinney said.“It’s a tough game because they are one of the best teams in the country, but it’s great game for the fans, and we have to play people. I’d just as soon play them than have to go all the way somewhere else to get a game.”I don’t imagine either side will actually commit to something like this. Georgia is busy scheduling just about every major program outside of the SEC to games, and it would be limiting on the flexibility that both programs have, with existing rivalries against Georgia Tech and South Carolina.Still, it is nice to see major coaches interested in prominent on-campus games like this.[DawgNation]last_img read more

JNU sedition case: Court says role of Delhi Police on sanction matter complete

first_imgNew Delhi: A city court hearing the 2016 JNU sedition case Saturday observed that the city police’s role regarding sanction was complete and it will now ask the Delhi government about the same. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sherawat made the observation after being told by police that sanction was an administrative action and the charge sheet can be filed without that. DCP of Special Cell of Delhi Police, Pramod Kushwaha, told the court that the agency has already sent a request to the Delhi government seeking sanction. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murder The court Friday pulled up the Delhi Police over non-appearance of the DCP, who was asked to file report in the case. The Delhi Police had earlier told the court that authorities were yet to give requisite sanctions to prosecute former JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar and others in the case, and it would take two to three months to procure sanctions. On January 14, police had filed a charge sheet in the court against Kumar and others, saying he was leading a procession and supported seditious slogans raised in the JNU campus during an event on February 9, 2016. The court had also sought a report from the deputy commissioner of police assigned to the case.last_img read more

ISIL unlawful sharia courts meting out monstrous punishments UN warns

Those who are punished are accused of ‘violating the group’s extremist interpretations of Islamic shari’a law or for suspected disloyalty,’ said Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), at a Geneva briefing this afternoon. “The ruthless murder of two men, who were thrown off the top of a building after having been accused of homosexual acts by a so-called court in Mosul, is another terrible example of the kind of monstrous disregard for human life that characterised ISIL’s reign of terror over areas of Iraq that were under the group’s control,” she added. Last week, ISIL also posted photos on the web of two men being ‘crucified’ after they were accused of banditry. The men were hung up by their arms and then shot dead. Photos were also posted of a woman being stoned to death, allegedly for adultery. OHCHR has received numerous other reports of women who had been executed by ISIL in Mosul and other areas under the group’s control, often immediately following sentences passed by its ‘shari’a courts.’“Educated, professional women, particularly women who had run as candidates in elections for public office seem to be particularly at risk. In just the first two weeks of the year, reports indicated that three female lawyers were executed,” said Ms. Shamdasani. Other civilians who are suspected of violating ISIL’s rules, or who are suspected of supporting the Government of Iraq, have also been victims. Four doctors were recently killed in central Mosul, allegedly after refusing to treat ISIL fighters. On 1 January, ISIL reportedly executed 15 civilians from the Jumaili Sunni Arab tribe in al-Shihabi area, Garma district, Fallujah. “They were apparently shot dead in front of a large crowd for their suspected cooperation with Iraqi Security Forces. In another incident, on 9 January, ISIL executed at least 14 men in a public square in Dour, north of Tikrit, for refusing to pledge allegiance to it,” Ms. Shamdasani confirmed.OHCHR has also been following reports of the release of a group of sick and elderly Yazidis, which included accounts that a ransom was paid. There are also reports that a ransom has been demanded made for Japanese hostages. The Japanese Government is in the process of verifying whether the video of the hostages is authentic, she said in response to questions. Finally, she said OHCHR will continue to document human rights abuses and violations taking place in Iraq and is expected to present a report to the Human Rights Council in March. read more

Credit: Wyatt Crosher | Assistant Sports EditorFresh off an NCAA tournament run that took Ohio State to the Frozen Four, members of the men’s hockey team were invited to attend NHL development camps over the offseason.Eight players received invites to these camps, including senior forward Mason Jobst, junior defenseman Tanner Laczynski, redshirt junior defenseman Wyatt Ege and redshirt senior goaltender Sean Romeo. These camps allow players to gain experience skating with professional players and working with NHL coaches. Mason JobstThis is the third time Jobst, the NCAA’s active leading scorer, has participated in an NHL development camp. Last offseason, he attended camps as a free agent invitee with the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins. This year, he joined the Minnesota Wild.“It was very cool,” Jobst said. “We’d go on the ice and we’d do either a skills session with one of their skills coaches or a skating lesson with the skating guy. So, it was pretty cool. The NHL coaches would come out and talk to us a little bit. It was a lot of fun.”Tanner LaczynskiLaczynski, who notched a career-high 47 points and earned First Team All Big-Ten honors last season, was taken with pick No. 169 by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round of the 2016 NHL Draft and has attended their camp the past two offseasons.“It’s definitely something special and definitely something I look forward to every summer, especially just to learn from those coaches and scouts and just to hear what they have to say about each individual’s game and how you can improve your game,” Laczynski said. Wyatt EgeEge has attended camp with the Las Vegas Golden Knights the past two years. This past season, the redshirt junior was fourth on the team in assists, while tying for the lead among defensemen on Ohio State with 18 points.“It was nice to see the guys, just because it was my second time back there. It was nice to see some familiar faces,” Ege said. “At [my] first development camp I was kind of a little nervous, seeing all these guys, you know, all these draft picks and now, going back for a second year, I already knew them.”Sean RomeoComing off a season during which he ranked No. 2 in the Big Ten in both goals against average and win percentage, Romeo was invited to his first development camp with the Columbus Blue Jackets.“It was cool to kind of be around some of the top players in the country, a lot of players we play against in college, and kind of learn from them and got great coaching for a week. [I] learned a lot and I’m excited to implement that stuff this year,” Romeo said.In addition, freshman forward Quinn Preston attended camp with the Winnipeg Jets, and freshman forward Gustaf Westlund joined the Florida Panthers. Freshman defenseman Ryan O’Connell, drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2017 NHL Draft, attended their camp. Senior defenseman Sasha Larocque also worked with the Anaheim Ducks at their camp over the summer. The Buckeyes will look to take the lessons from these camps into their season-opening series against Arizona State on Oct. 12 and 13. read more

Tourism hit hard by negative images abroad

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Greece’s negative image abroad as a holiday destination has had an impact on most sectors of the tourism economy, with representatives saying that compared to last year, yacht rentals are down by 35 percent, conferences and corporate events have declined by 50 per cent and car hires are 15 per cent down this season compared to last.Cruise reservations are also expected to take a hit, according to Andreas Stylianopoulos, a board member of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) and vice president of the Passenger Shipping Association (SEEN). Stylianopoulos attended the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention that took place in Miami, Florida, earlier this month, from which, he told Kathimerini, it was clear that Greece can expect a small decline in the number of cruise arrivals this year. He added that tourists’ interest continues to be centred on Athens although there is a significant amount of concern regarding the Greek capital’s negative reputation. Crewless yacht rentals have seen a decline of 35 percent so far this year, according to the head of the Hellenic Professional Yacht Owners Association (EPEST), Antonis Stelliatos. “One of Greece’s biggest yachting companies attended this year’s travel and tourism trade show in Dusseldorf. While in previous years the company would make from 80 to 100 rental deals at the show, this year it made only seven,” Stelliatos said indicatively. As far as the category of motor yachts with a crew of 12 is concerned, Stelliatos says that the big question is how many of these will be laid up this year, adding that of the 800 vessels for hire on the market, less than 50 have so far made deals, and these for very few days. According to Stelliatos, the reason for the low interest is Greece’s negative image abroad. Source: Kathimerinilast_img read more

Hellenic Republic sold business as usual

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram UPDATEGeorge Calombaris says it’s “business as usual” as the building housing his Hellenic Republic restaurant in Brunswick has been sold for $2.375 million. The chef told Neos Kosmos that the restaurant won’t be affected, as he has secured an ongoing ten-year lease before the building was sold. The sale went 15 per cent above the reserve, after five interested parties pushed up the price. It means the new tenants will be netting a return of $120,000 per annum plus outgoings and GST, and includes a tenant bank guarantee of six months rental.Real Estate agency Fitzroys said the property generated a significant level of interest from local and interstate investors not only due to the high profile nature of the tenant but also its generous site proportions and rapidly evolving inner north location.“The demographics of Brunswick East have undergone a transformation in recent years, with the gentrification of the area resulting in a wave of affluent home owners settling in the area, improving the economic viability of the Lygon Street retail precinct,” Fitzroys Director Chris Kombi said.“Accordingly, we have witnessed a significant amount of development within the immediate and broader vicinity of the subject property. This strong demand for inner city living has resulted in an escalation of residential values in the area.”The sale comes after Calombaris’ restaurant group, Made Establishment has been rethinking its business model. It has closed a number of under-performing restaurants, including the recent Manu Feidel collaboration Le Grand Cirque, and will be looking to buy smaller buildings with lower rent and spend less on refurbishing the spaces. last_img read more

Annual 4th Of July Parade Will Close Spur Hwy

first_imgKenai Chamber of Commerce President Johna Beech says the parade lineup will be from 8-10 a.m., on Trading Bay Road with the parade itself starting at 11 a.m. Beech: “Be mindful that we will be closing down the Spur Hwy from 11-12:30pm for the Parade. KPD does a great job of  rerouting traffic, but if you are in a hurry that’s not the day to be in a hurry. I can’t believe we are almost here, but it looks like it’s going to be another great 4th of July.”  The midway festivities are from noon to 4 p.m., with various vendors, a beer garden sponsored by Kassiks Brewery, and a kids carnival. The route for the parade starts down Fidalgo Ave, left on Willow Street, right on the Kenai Spur Hwy, and then a right on Main Street Loop.
