Reuters | New York | Published: September 8 2017 10:01 am Venus Williams was beaten by Sloane Stephens in US Open semi-final (Source: Reuters) Related News Expectations were so high for Venus Williams that the seven-time grand slam champion choked in her US Open semi-final against fellow American Sloane Stephens on Thursday according to former world number one Mats Wilander The 37-year-old Williams reached two major finals this season but Stephens denied her a third in a 6-1 0-6 7-5 victory on Arthur Ashe Stadium “Venus looked a little bit nervous she looked a little bit nervous in the Wimbledon final too which is understandable at 37 years old because you’re not going to have many more chances” Wilander in Flushing Meadows as an analyst for Eurosport said in his daily chat with Reuters The Swede said Stephens’s playing style had everything to bother the ninth seed who grew more frustrated as the match went on “The match-up is bad for her because Stephens gets everything back in play she’s so fast and shots that usually are winners for her she has to hit again and hit again and it’s not really Venus’s strength” said Wilander “She likes to hit a couple or three shots and then the rally is over” That was rarely the case against Stephens whose defence eventually made the difference with Williams missing several volleys “Today she was forced to come to the net and you can tell she’s not that natural to come and finish off points but it was a great effort to come back after losing the first set” Wilander said If Williams had won it would have been the first time since 2002 that she had played in three grand slam finals in a year but Wilander said it was obvious her passion for the game was still at sky-high levels “She was in three finals in 2002 she could have done it 15 years later Her passion for tennis is just through the roof It’s Roger Federer level” said Wilander “She should have won the match but she’s had so much success in her career and when you keep pushing the envelope and keep playing things turn around and you’re not going to have the same success at some point” For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Related NewsBy: nominate the apocalypse You may not have noticed but we survived an end-of-the-world moment again this week when a lunar eclipse made the moon look sort of reddish This is known as a Blood Moon and in certain circles it was seen as the Start of Something Big “The heavens are God’s billboard” said televangelist John Hagee author of the best-selling Four Blood Moons: Something Is About to Change This is the same Hagee who once theorised that Hurricane Katrina was God’s punishment to New Orleans for scheduling a gay pride parade He later apologised And moved on To the moon As doomsday scenarios go this one is not particularly original: the basic evangelical vision of trouble in the Middle East followed by the Second Coming And red moons happen all the time If you wanted a sign of the end of days this week there are lots better candidates You can read all about that in my upcoming book The End of Guacamole The Blood Moon predictions are going to be with us for a while because there will be four of the same lunar eclipses over the next year and a half And Hagee’s theories have sold a heck of a lot of books on Amazon But they lack the exciting specificity of the classic end-of-the-world prophecies Like polar shifts (earth crust moves triggering volcanoes floods and eliminating all life-forms) or the Amazing Criswell who was waiting for a black rainbow to show up and suck off all the oxygen Television is taking up the slack It’s awash with doomsday stories Killer viruses planetary power failures nuclear war Plus your basic Rapture Chris Carter the X-Files creator who’s offering The After was apparently really moved by that Mayan-calendar-ends crisis in 2012 “There was nervousness in the air… Certainly the power of that played a part in my desire to do something about a world-changing event” he told TV Guide People do you remember being all that worried about the Mayan calendar Or zombies Zombies are still so popular It would be nice if we were being barraged with a new series about a utopian future where everybody got along except your occasional Romulan Yet here we are The feel-good side of end-of-the-world predictions is that everything seems so nice the day after We’re still here There’s oxygen Unless you’re someone like Robert Fitzpatrick a follower of the late Harold Camping a serial apocalypse predictor who claimed Judgment Day was going to be May 21 2011 Fitzpatrick spent what he said was his life savings putting warning signs in the New York City subway system (“Global Earthquake: The Greatest Ever”) Remember Y2K and all the millennium end-of-the-world scenarios Years ago I worked on a project to collect all the predictions about terrible things that were going to happen in the year 2000 and I enjoyed it very much I talked to a guy living on a mountain who was both waiting for the end and writing a movie script about it Also an official in a small Illinois town that had been founded on a plan to airlift refugees into space This was all based on the work of the town’s founder Richard Kieninger who was eventually kicked out amid rumours of sexual misbehaviour The rest of the community decided to just concentrate on building self-sufficient lifestyles And then the pope It was only a year ago that the College of Cardinals was meeting in the Vatican to elect a pope and some people were pointing out that this one was going to be the last pontiff according to a 12th-century prediction made by St Malachy who also mentioned the destruction of Rome and “many tribulations” everywhere True Malachy’s list was probably a forgery But who would have predicted that Catholics would get a new pope who was obsessed with the poor and totally uninterested in people’s sex lives Nobody Talking heads sniffed when Francis was chosen and said the cardinals “probably did not come up with the most progressive pope in the history of the world” Actually that would have been me Our moral today is that things dumped in the godown in Sector 20 Chandigarh on Thursday (Express photo by Sahil Walia) Top News As the deadline of October 2 — the day by which the city had to achieve 100 per cent waste segregation — nears the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation seems to be in a hurry to issue “long-pending” directions which should have been given soon after the launch of the waste segregation project in June Merely 24 hours before the “Swachhta hi seva drive” is to begin in all the cities which would culminate in the main event on October 2 the civic officials in a haste issued letters asking sanitation officials and residents’ welfare associations to “hold regular quarterly meetings” and “initially monthly for better results” for spreading awareness The residents’ welfare associations claim that since the launch of the project this is the first time they have got a communiqué from the MC over the issue Not just this the two coloured bins that remained stashed in the MC store most of the time have finally got some attention as the distribution which had almost disappeared has picked up There are hundreds of bins lying in the MC store which will be distributed before October 2 The letter issued by the medical officer of health-cum-nodal officer on Thursday stated “As Swachh Bharat Mission is envisaged as Jan Aandolan involvement of all sections of city is vital for achieving the mission objective Therefore involvement of RWAs religious groups for source segregation is necessary You are requested to conduct regular quarterly meetings with these groups at the ward level Initially these meetings may be conducted monthly for better results” A copy of the letter has been sent to the residents’ welfare associations as well The RWAs have now even been asked to fill out the consent letter which states “I appreciate the initiative of segregation of waste at source and local composting undertaken by MoUD GOI and MC Chandigarh under Swachh Bharat Mission I do hereby give my consent to promote this initiative and provide all the help and support in this to make Chandigarh a clean city” Hitesh Puri vice-chairman Federation of Sectors Welfare Associations Chandigarh (FOSWAC) stated “How come just few hours before the drive is to begin the MC is reminded of holding regular meetings with residents to create awareness over source segregation Ever since the launch of the project my entire sector has not even seen the bins what to talk of getting those for segregation” Puri claimed that the exercise was a “mere formality” “It is all paper work These meetings should have been held from June itself Just because the Centre has directed all they have woken up” Mayor Asha Jaswal said that MC tried hard to hold awareness camps but now had to issue letters “We kept speaking about segregation in every event as we thought that word of mouth would actually change the mindset of people But since the residents didn’t show much interest we had to issue such letters for meetings and get the consent letters filled” Jaswal said that she was still hopeful of achieving 100 per cent waste segregation by October 2 On June 5 the project of door-to-door waste segregation project was launched with much fanfare UT Administrator V P Singh Badnore during the event at Tagore Theatre had specifically told the MC to ensure that regular drives awareness campaigns were held while distributing the two coloured bins Be it the contention that councillors were on vacation or the fact that the company was not sending bins due to GST the segregation drive almost fizzled out Baljinder Singh Bittu chairman of FOSWAC said “Had the MC been really sincere in making people aware they would have reviewed the progress of the project every week It is just an eyewash” Badnore to
